Nine teenagers have been arrested for the June 24 fatal shooting of Trey Dean Wright, a 16-year-old resident of Johnsonville, South Carolina. According to law enforcement, the incident was the result of a fight that broke out “over a girl,” and prosecutors say some of the suspects captured video of the shooting.
Florence County deputies found Wright’s body on First Neck Road on June 24. He had been shot multiple times. The remote road where Wright was located is about 45 miles west of Myrtle Beach, according to local media. The next day, 19-year-old Devan Scott Raper of Conway was arrested for the shooting, which, according to officials, was the result of an argument that Raper and Wright were having, which got “heated.”
Raper pulled out a gun and started shooting at Wright, and a murder charge has since been filed. But the sheriff’s office said soon after Raper’s arrest that he wasn’t acting alone, and over the next few weeks, nine more arrests were announced. Officials allege that a group of teenagers had lured Wright to a remote area and called Raper, who was waiting for the victim to arrive with a loaded firearm. Raper was known to have made threats against Wright.
Wright’s mother, Ashley Lindsey, said in an interview with Fox News Digital that the legal process has been difficult for her family. “All this court hearing and bond court and stuff is driving me crazy,” she said. “I don’t even have time to sit down and think half the time, on top of losing my precious baby.”
Wright’s girlfriend, 17-year-old Gianna Kistenmacher of Myrtle Beach, was among the arrestees. Officials allege that she played a central role in the shooting by calling Wright, getting him to the location, and driving him to where Raper was waiting. Kistenmacher has been charged with accessory before the fact, which in South Carolina carries a maximum sentence of 10 years. Prosecutors are also charging her with enticing and inducing, a misdemeanor. Authorities say she knew Raper had a gun and was likely to use it.
Investigators arrested five more suspects the day after Kistenmacher’s booking. A sixth suspect was arrested the next day. All six are minors, and in South Carolina, prosecutors can charge minors as adults for serious offenses like murder. A Florence County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson told WBTW-TV that five of the suspects are being charged as adults.
“The hand of one being the hand of all is part of South Carolina law as well, so that’s the basis of the charge for each of those individuals,” said Major Michael Nunn of the Florence County Sheriff’s Office.
Three more teens, all from the Myrtle Beach area, were charged with murder in addition to Raper. They have been identified as 18-year-olds Hunter Kendall and Corrine Belviso, and 17-year-old Sydney Kearns. All face accessory charges as well.
The suspects were among a group of young people who allegedly got Wright to drive to the site of the planned confrontation. Sheriff T.J. Joye told local media outlets that the shooting was the result of a feud over a female. “They had issues with each other, and it was over a female,” Joye said. “The sad thing is, you’ve got a 16-year-old who lost his life. You’ve got a 19-year-old who is going to be in jail the rest of his life. Over what?”
Raper is charged with murder and possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime, and he is being held without bond. Kendall is also charged with murder and is being held without bond. Belviso and Kearns both posted $20,000 surety bonds last week and are free to leave the state. All six of the other teens are free to leave the state.
The Florence County Sheriff’s Office said that the matter is still under investigation, and prosecutors have declined to provide additional information. The family of Trey Wright is, however, quite vocal. In addition to taking to social media to publicly mourn her son’s death, his mother has expressed frustration at the lengthy court process.
She said her family’s world was rocked when the verdict was delivered, and her son’s girlfriend, along with several of her son’s friends, was facing charges over his death. The shooting also has community members upset, according to local news, because the fighting and chasing around is generally considered a teenage issue, but was further exacerbated by firearm access in this case.
