Spock Brings Humor to Strange New Worlds Season 3
Paramount+ has just released the official trailer for the third season of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. Set to premiere on July 17, 2025, the release of the trailer comes months after the series was first renewed and after fans only received a small teaser in April.
The second season of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds ended on a major cliffhanger. The U.S.S. Enterprise was embroiled in a Gorn invasion of a Federation colony world when the reptilian aliens attacked, leaving several crew members and other survivors held hostage. Pike (Anson Mount) was then forced to decide between following Starfleet orders to evacuate or risk everything to try to rescue them. As fans might expect, Pike decided to go with the second option, and the opening preview of Season 3 from New York City Comic-Con last October began directly after the end of the season 2 finale, with the Enterprise crew trapped on a Gorn vessel in space while Pike and Number One (Melinda Clarke) attempt to locate the hostages. In addition to continuing the action from the previous season, the preview also teased the tension of a star-spanning rescue mission with another of the series’ signature, large-scale space battles.
The new trailer offers more footage from the beginning of the third season, continuing to show the Enterprise crew in combat with the Gorn. From the trailer, it’s clear that the third season of Strange New Worlds will wrap up the Gorn storyline while also introducing an entirely new and powerful villain who will try to test the crew to their limits, physically and emotionally. According to Paramount+, the third season will also include more diverse episodes in terms of genre than previous seasons of Strange New Worlds. The trailer teases some episodes of faith, duty, and romance, while also showing moments of comedy and mystery.
Pike will continue to captain the Enterprise in the third season, but the new trailer shows that the crew won’t be completely safe from harm just yet. While Strange New Worlds will wrap up the Gorn story arc, the new trailer teases an even bigger threat to the Enterprise crew, who will also try to test the bonds between the crew and each character’s mettle. In addition to the series’ typical mixture of episodic Star Trek stories, Paramount+ also teases that some episodes will have a very different feel than has been seen in previous seasons or any Star Trek series before.
It was previously announced that the series would be back with its same main cast and roster of recurring characters. Season 3 of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds will also introduce some new faces to the crew, the most notable of which is Cillian O’Sullivan as Dr. Roger Korby. Korby is a character from the original Star Trek series with the character played by Michael Strong. The trailer also reveals that in the Strange New Worlds canon, Dr. Korby is a noted archaeologist with a focus on medical archaeology and, more notably, the former fiancé of Nurse Christine Chapel (Jess Bush). His appearance aboard the Enterprise will no doubt complicate things for Chapel, who has found a romantic partner of her own in Spock (Ethan Peck).
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds also has Rhys Darby and Patton Oswalt set to guest star in the third season. As with the revelation that the new season will have a very different tone from other Trek series, the trailer reveals that there will be plenty of action for fans of Star Trek, while the April teaser also alluded to a stand-alone episode involving a hilariously drunk Spock. The new trailer continues to show a diverse season, mixing action-adventure with lighter side stories. Another episode to look for in the third season will be the one in which the new character of Dr. Roger Korby (Cillian O’Sullivan), arrives. His relationship with Chapel will complicate things for the Enterprise crew, most notably Spock.
Fans will also get a rare look at James T. Kirk (Paul Wesley) in the captain’s chair. The third season trailer shows Kirk in a conversation with Pike. While the context for the scene is not revealed, it’s clear from Pike’s words that Kirk has taken over command of the Enterprise. “The choices you make in that chair, they are yours to make and yours to live with,” Pike tells Kirk. The exact nature of Kirk’s role in the season and for how long he will serve as captain of the Enterprise remains to be seen, but what’s clear from the scene is that Kirk will have a leadership moment that will shape him for the future.
The final sequence of the trailer, which may very well end up being one of the funniest Trek moments ever, involves a Vulcan being taught a high five by Oswalt’s character. After successfully doing the high five, the Vulcan asks the human to “go down low,” to which he responds by pulling the “too slow” move. The Vulcan asks in confusion, “Why would you do that?” to which Spock simply replies, “Because you are too slow.”
