Dominique Thorne Suits Up Again in Ironheart Series Trailer

Ryan Coogler’s good fortune with box office hits is continuing into 2025. Just a few weeks after his new movie Sinners surpassed all expectations, the popular director already has his next hit in the works in Marvel’s highly anticipated limited series Ironheart. The studio has just released a sleek new trailer in advance of the show’s June 2025 release.

Running for six episodes, the Marvel Cinematic Universe installment stars Dominique Thorne as Riri Williams, a teenage genius who makes a name for herself in the original comic books as Ironheart and a protégé of Tony Stark. Ironheart will be the last TV series to be included in the MCU’s Phase Five.

Announced in December 2020, Ironheart was originally scheduled for release in 2023, but production and release dates have been moved forward multiple times since then. Most recently, Marvel announced a delay to its new phase of film and TV production in the MCU, opting to release less content per year in response to fears of market oversaturation. Footage revealed during the 2024 D23 convention also suggests that Ironheart will be “grounded” with a darker tone than many other MCU series, describing it as “basically a crime show with an Iron Man twist at the center.”

Fans of Riri Williams will already be familiar with her character, who was first introduced in 2022’s Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. In that film, Riri found herself in conflict with Namor and his army of blue-skinned people after inventing a vibranium detector at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. During the film, Riri and Shuri form a friendship as two women who love science, and Riri goes on to build a version of an iron suit like Iron Man’s to help Wakanda in its fight. At the end of the movie, she is forced to leave the suit with Wakandans as she returns to MIT.

Set Not Too Long After Wakanda Forever

Ironheart will pick up some time after the conclusion of Wakanda Forever. According to the official description, “Set after the events of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Ironheart pits technology against magic when Riri—determined to make her mark on the world—returns to her hometown of Chicago. Her unique take on building iron suits is brilliant, but in pursuit of her ambitions, she finds herself wrapped up with the mysterious yet charming Parker Robbins, aka ‘The Hood’ (Anthony Ramos).”

Thorne is not the only notable name involved with the production. Lyric Ross will star as Riri’s best friend, Natalie Washington; Alden Ehrenreich will appear as Joe McGillicuddy; Manny Montana is cast as Cousin John; Matthew Elam will star as Xavier Washington; and Anji White will play Riri’s mother, Ronnie. Shea Couleé is also in the cast as Slug. Jim Rash will reprise his role as the dean of MIT from Captain America: Civil War in 2016. Sacha Baron Cohen is also on the cast list, though Marvel has revealed no information on his character yet.

The newly released trailer quickly gives viewers a sense of the direction the series will take. It opens with Riri standing in an empty pizza restaurant that appears to be closed down. A man calls her on the phone, and she opens an elevator that has just appeared, only to find that she is stuck in a poison-filled elevator with two minutes left until she dies. When she begins to panic, the voice on the phone informs her that it’s just an interview or, as he prefers to call it, an “interview.” The Hood, he tells her, has set her up and left her with no choice but to break into a device on the floor to access a gas mask. Riri, however, refuses to comply and instead works her way out of the building in another, more creative way.

Impressed, The Hood invites her to join him in an unspecified criminal endeavor—one he makes clear is not entirely above board. Riri, who has been waiting for a chance to show off her skills and build something truly “iconic,” is swayed with minimal hesitation and quickly agrees. However, she is quickly chastised by her friends for her willingness to team up with The Hood, particularly by Natalie, who attempts to warn Riri about the dangerous man. The Hood, who seems to have carefully cultivated his oystique among the local street-level crime scene, could very well be a bad influence, and it’s a possibility the Riri’s friends feel justified in when The Hood openly tells her, “Anyone who has ever accomplished anything iconic in life has had to do some questionable things to get it done.”

Marvel has confirmed that the first three episodes of Ironheart will launch on Disney+ on June 24, 2025, with new episodes arriving every week after that. There has been no word yet on whether the series will be renewed for a second season or not, though that remains a possibility, particularly if it scores as well as Sinners has this year. Fans of the MCU and Marvel’s new series have plenty of time to wait before the series premiere, but the studio has already released the new trailer as well as a newly released behind-the-scenes featurette.

Coogler’s resume and Thorne’s performance suggest that Ironheart will be an exciting series, with Riri’s potential future in question from the start. If the MCU’s next TV venture can make something exciting out of that promise, then it will also have an unusually high number of viewers interested from the start.
