The company first began embedding AI components into their search services early in 2024, but reached a new level of progress last month with the launch of “AI Mode.” This new mode demonstrates the potential shift toward a future where the standard list of ten blue links becomes an obsolete feature of the past.

Google’s early user feedback on AI Mode has been favorable, which has led to their decision to enhance these results using powerful multimodal capabilities. The progression of this technology stems from a specialized adaptation of Google’s sophisticated Gemini large language model (LLM). Google has confirmed that their custom model now enables multimodal input which allows users to directly add images to their AI Mode search queries.

The transformative update brings a new button to the AI Mode search bar, which lets users capture photos in real-time or upload pre-existing images from their devices. Google Lens’s advanced object recognition technology substantially strengthens the image interpretation abilities of the enhanced Gemini model. Google states that Lens functions as an essential tool because it accurately identifies distinct objects in the images users upload. The detailed contextual data gets transmitted without disruption to AI Mode, which enables the execution of numerous connected sub-queries through a method the company defines as a “fan-out technique.”

Google shows a concrete example to make the practical implications of this new feature understandable to users. A user shows AI Mode multiple book covers and requests recommendations for similar titles. Google Lens systematically recognizes every single book title within visual images. AI Mode uses this level of detail to integrate unique book traits into its response. The AI system provides better-suited book recommendations based on visual book data while also supporting additional inquiries related to those initial books.

Google views AI Mode as the fundamental element of its strategy to ensure it remains the leading internet directory. The company has indicated that traditional search remains the primary method through which a large number of users find direct answers to their questions. AI Mode provides faster and better access to desired information for these people. Google’s initial analysis of AI Mode data demonstrates a significant shift in user activity patterns. Users submit searches that are twice as long in AI Mode as they do when using traditional web searches, according to company data. Google views the increased text input as advanced queries, but there’s a possibility that users feel they must give the AI more context to fulfill their search needs.

The AI Mode feature became available to users multiple weeks ago, yet remains a feature that many people have not tried. At launch, only Google One AI Premium subscribers gained access to this functionality, which needed manual enabling through Google Labs. AI mode accessibility continues to grow for more users. Google stated its plan to widen access for “millions more Labs users in the US” who currently do not have premium AI service subscriptions. The trend indicates that AI Mode will eventually become an integral search feature for the general public after new users complete the necessary opt-in process.
