Following months of developer previews and limited beta testing combined with speculation, Google has officially started the rollout of Android 16. Pixel devices will receive the update first while other Android smartphones will get it during the following weeks or more probably months.

Users with Pixel devices should begin receiving the OTA update today. Google provides system images and manual update files on its developer site for users who do not wish to wait for the OTA update. You can wait to update unless you are particularly enthusiastic about it. The update doesn’t introduce major changes immediately.

What’s New in Android 16

The notification shade shows one of the most prominent updates in Android 16. Android 7.0 Nougat marked the debut of bundled notifications through Google. After activation your phone stops connecting to 2G networks, it restricts access to non-secure websites and blocks USB data transfer. Google is placing greater emphasis on user privacy and device safety through its expanding security initiatives.

Those interested in customization will enjoy exploring the new AI-driven emoji feature. The Pixel Studio app enables people to build their own emojis using Emoji Kitchen. This interactive feature demonstrates Google’s increasing dedication to creating generative AI-driven experiences.

Android 16 introduces important changes for developers behind the scenes. One key improvement is automatic large-screen support. Developers who target Android 16 (API level 36) will find their apps can now scale to fill foldables and tablets seamlessly. Developers who design their apps specifically for larger devices will benefit from improved display quality after this system update.

The magnifier app now offers live search capabilities along with expanded support for hearing aids. Expressive Captions has expanded its availability to the UK, Canada, and Australia after being initially restricted to the U.S.

Pixel phones are the exclusive platform for these features which require Android 16 to operate.

Delayed but Promising Features

The full range of Android 16 capabilities will not be available today. Google plans to release certain highly anticipated updates later in 2025.

Take Material 3 Expressive, for instance. The redesigned design language announced last month will become available at some point later this year. Google hasn’t set a specific release date but has advised developers to start preparing their apps for future updates. Users can expect a livelier and more vibrant interface in the updated Android design.

Android has introduced a highly anticipated desktop mode for its platform. Samsung joined forces to develop this system which extends their existing DeX platform. Tablets will soon be able to project windowed desktop interfaces to external displays and this functionality will eventually extend to phones. The Pixel 9 Pro Fold will not offer on-device windowing but supports windowing only through its external display.

OEM support is not guaranteed. Google Pixel devices will receive full windowing support while other Android 16 devices may receive only basic screen mirroring based on manufacturer decisions.

A Shift in Release Strategy

The most significant modification to Android 16 relates to its release schedule rather than its features. The Android software updates used to be released during fall months to coincide with new Pixel device launches in past years. That’s no longer the case. Google schedules major Android updates for late spring with additional API-focused updates releasing by year end.

The change aims to provide increased flexibility in the release schedule. The release of Android 16 follows Google’s updated release schedule and although its launch lacks typical fanfare, it establishes the groundwork for future developments.
